The Nicky Line is now a popular public footpath that runs for a large part through open countryside to the back of Rothamsted Research Station.
| Activities Away - Outdoor Adventure for all the Family Fancy an outdoor adventure in Lincolnshire or the Peak District, or further afield in France or beyond? Then try Activities Away ! | Countryside Management Service The Countryside Management Service has developed a series of self-guided walks following waymarked paths throughout the county. These are described in a series of leaflets, available from local libraries, and are being added to the website. Many of the leaflets can be downloaded as Acrobat PDF files that you can print off to take with you. There are a few walks in and around Harpenden, including St Albans/Dacorum. | St Albans and District Footpaths Society The aims of the St Albans and District Footpaths Society are to preserve rights of way and the beauty of the countryside for the benefit of the public. Walks are organised at least once a week throughout the year and there are occasional evening social events. | Hertfordshire Way For those made of sterner stuff, try the Hertfordshire Way, a wandering route taking in the length and breadth of the county, mainly through agricultural land, woodland and chalk downs. It includes the edge of the Chilterns, the National Trust estate at Ashridge Forest, leafy suburbia and principal urban areas such as Hertford, Bishops Stortford and the historic city of St Albans with its Roman remains and famous cathedral. This site is useful to find other more manageable walks in the Hertfodshire area and further afield. | Walking Britain With over 5600 pages of information, "Walking Britain" is dedicated to the footpaths that cross the landscape. The National Parks feature strongly including the Lake District, the Peak District and Snowdonia, not to mention the Yorkshire Dales. You can also buy walking books and maps, with the option of having your OS maps laminated. |
